Scalable Network Technologies is an enterprise that develops network simulation technology to deliver communications design and analysis tools and cyber training systems that are used by governmental and military organizations, educational institutions, and commercial enterprises around the world. SCALABLE solutions meld software virtual networks with physical hardware and applications, allowing users to test "what if" scenarios for operational planning, training and enhanced communications effectiveness without building physical infrastructure.

The company is headquartered in Los Angeles but has partnered with companies such as Analytical Graphics, Presagis, and VT MAK so as to combine Scalable products with other simulation systems to create broad planning, testing, and training systems.

Corporate history

Scalable Network Technologies was founded by Dr. Rajive Bagrodia in Los Angeles in 1999. Dr. Bagrodia was working as a UCLA Professor of Computer Science when he and his research group achieved significant innovations in the theory and practice of performance prediction for complex, large-scale computer and communication systems. He realized that this work could form the basis of powerful commercial products and proceeded to develop simulators such as QualNet and Exata.

Products

QualNet

The QualNet® communications simulation platform enables users to build software virtual networks that will accurately predict the behavior of real communications environments. The product is a planning, testing and training tool that imitates the functioning of a real communications network so that users can design different network scenarios and analyze the network performance to find combinations of network features that are likely to succeed.

EXata

The EXata communications simulation platform is a network emulator that helps in developing a net-centric system that customers can use to see how their applications (such as VoIP, situational awareness, sensor data, and streaming video) will perform when the real system is built. The platform lets users combine software virtual network models with live networks, network elements and networked applications to understand how diverse networks will perform under real-world variable conditions.

Joint Network Emulator

The Joint Network Emulator program (JNE) was created to research technology that would help with the design of the Joint Tactical Radio System waveforms and supporting equipment and was so successful that Scalable was contracted to transition the research work into an operational product that could be deployed throughout the DoD for JTRS planning, testing and training. The JNE emulates one or more JTRS-based radios so that a live JTRS radio can interoperate with the JNE, communicating as if both were live radios transmitting over the air. The JNE provides a high fidelity realistic construct of hundreds of JNE systems in a simulated virtual environment in this way so that technical developers can experience exactly how emerging communications technology would perform out in the battlefield.

Network defense trainer

The product is a live-virtual-constructive (LVC) system that creates cyber range environments that can train all types of cyber warriors, as trainees have to react to realistic, stressful situations in a high fidelity synthetic environment that models the information transport fabric between servers and end-point systems. The system leverages a true virtual network model so that the Trainer system represents a distributed network system, representing mobile wireless equipment as they interoperate with a wired back bone network infrastructure. Both live and virtual hosts can be connected to the virtual network model and the system can also be connected with other training simulators
